New Pet Registration Enquiry

The registration period is from 10 April to 9 April each year.

The law requires all owners of a cat or dog over 3 months old, to register it with Council. The registration period is from 10 April to 9 April each year. Failure to register or renew the registration of your pet can incur a penalty of over $300.

  • All cats and dogs must be microchipped before they can be registered.
  • Pets under three months old will be exempt of paying the registration fee, for the remainder of that registration period. 
  • Pets adopted from recognised adoption agencies are exempt from the registration fee for the remainder of that registration period.
  • If your pet is desexed, you will need to provide the certificate for our records. If you desex your pet within 1 month of paying the registration fee and provide the certificate, we will refund the difference.
  • Discount on fees if you hold a full pensioner concession card or DVA Gold Card with war widow or TPI classification.

How to register your pet

To register a pet, the customer needs to complete a form.

CSO:

The preferred method to register the dog or cat is to complete the online form.
Email the website link using link template www.greaterdandenong.vic.gov.au. When completing the online form, they need to upload the necessary documents to prove microchip details and any reduce fee documents. It goes to the animal management admin to be processed. They will send animal tag in the mail and text them a link to pay online.

For customers who present in person at the counter or if a customer does not email, this paper version can be posted or completed.

What is required with the form

  • It is mandatory to provide proof of microchipping for all pet registrations - see acceptable proof
  • The animal might qualify for a reduced animal registration fee if they qualify under the grounds listed under What is acceptable proof for reduced fees for Cats & Dogs accordion.
  • Discount on fees if you hold a full pensioner concession card or DVA Gold Card with war widow or TPI classification.

What happens after an online registration form is submitted

  • The Applicant is then sent an SMS to their nominated mobile to make a payment either via the online payment link or by calling customer service.

How long will it take

  • Up to 15 working days

What about the tag

  • A tag will be sent out once a payment is received.

 

Transferring a pet registration from another Council

For all new registrations, the following must be provided:

  • Completed Pet Registration form
  • Evidence of microchipping - see acceptable proof
  • If the customer has a pension card or Gold TPI card, council offers microchip implant service. Click here for more information.
  • Evidence required if your pet meets the criteria for a reduced fee, see acceptable proof above under new pet registration
  • Proof of payment for current registration year, if not provided the application will be a new registration and payment will be required.

  1. Photocopy all relevant documentation
  2. Issue tag
  3. Complete office box on the application form
  4. Provide tag and photocopy of the application form to the customer
  5. Scan all documentation to Records

  • Advise the applicant that proof must be supplied to transfer current registration
  • If the applicant has no proof of current registration then treat this as a new registration. Go to the receipt payment page.

Transferring a pet registration to another Council

This council does not transfer pet registration to another council. They will have to complete the necessary paperwork with the other Council.

We don't provide refunds either if transferring to another Council. They can check with the other Council if they will charge them a fee.

Guide Dogs

Guide dogs trained by Guide Dogs Australia are exempt from Council registration.

Are Assistance Dogs exempt from registration fees?

Assistance dogs, trained to alleviate the effects of the owner's disability, are now exempt from local council registration after legislative changes. This is to acknowledge the important role assistance dogs play in the lives of Victorians and their families, a Governor in Council Order has now been made under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 to exempt eligible assistance dogs from council pet registration fees.

To qualify as an assistance dog

To qualify as an assistance dog the following conditions need to be met:

The applicant provides the Council with information that confirms that the assistance
dog –

  • is trained to perform tasks or functions that assist a person with a disability to alleviate the effects of their disability (e.g. via a training certificate);
  • is at least 12 months of age;
  • is desexed;
  • has completed obedience training provided by a dog trainer; and
  • is not a restricted breed dog.

Also

  • The assistance dog has not been declared by the Council to be –
    • a dangerous dog; or
    • a menacing dog;

Also

  • The owner of the assistance dog has not been convicted of 2 or more offences under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 with respect to the same assistance dog.
