Food Contamination or Tastes like Chemicals Report

Types of Food Contamination:

Biological:
This refers to contamination by microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, parasites, and molds. Examples include E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria. 

Chemical:
This involves the presence of harmful chemicals in food, which can be natural or artificial. Examples include pesticides, heavy metals, and cleaning chemicals. 

Physical:
This is when foreign objects like glass, metal fragments, or plastic are present in food. 

Report for business that Solely Sell Fish, Meat, Poultry or Manufacture Dairy Products

Council does not investigate these types of complaints. Refer customers to the organisations below:

A business that trades solely in:

  • Meat
  • Poultry
  • Fish

Refer all enquires and reports to Primesafe on Ph: 9685 7333 

A business that only manufactures:

  • Dairy products 

Refer all enquires to Dairy Food Safety Victoria on Ph: 9810 5900 

Report all other types of food business

Customer:

  • Complete a Statement of Complaint Regarding Contaminated Food

  • If possible, the purchased food must be brought directly to the Dandenong office—not to Parkmore or Springvale—as the Public Health department is based in Dandenong.
  • We must hand the sample over to them directly; transporting it between centres is not permitted, as it may risk contamination.

Complete Merit request  

Health > Food > Premises/Food Handling Concerns
Health > Food > Food Chemical

 

Ask and Record in Merit:

  • Complete UDF's

 

After Merit has been completed:

  • Write the Merit number on the form
  • Scan to Records
  • If food has been handed in, call Public Health Admin immediately, stating Merit number if the food has been handed in at the counters, contact must be made.

Advise the customer:

  • To complete a Statement of Complaint Regarding Contaminated Food

  • If possible, the purchased food must be brought directly to the Dandenong office—not to Parkmore or Springvale—as the Public Health department is based in Dandenong.
  • We must hand the sample over to them directly; transporting it between centres is not permitted, as it may risk contamination.
  • A report will be submitted after we receive the form. They need to present in person if they have the food sample.
