Detecting Counterfeit Banknotes

Detecting Counterfeit Money

What do you do if you suspect you have received a counterfeit note:

People who pass a counterfeit note may be doing it innocently in that they themselves are victims of having received the banknote.

If you are suspicious of a banknote:

  • Refuse to accept it and explain to the person why
  • You can refer them to their bank for further advice.

The Reserve Bank of Australia in conjunction with the Australian Federal Police are responsible for maintaining the integrity of Australian banknotes.

The most commonly counterfeited bank note is the $50.00
