What is a Vehicle Crossing?

A vehicle crossing is the part of your driveway that crosses the footpath and nature strip and meets the road. It lets cars and other vehicles enter and exit your property.

When do you need a Vehicle Crossing Permit?

Before building or widening a vehicle crossing, you need a vehicle crossing permit. All residential vehicle crossing permit applications must first be assessed before a permit can be issued.

How to apply for a permit

Council will no longer accept paper applications via email or in person instead only via online

An online application is required, with copies of the following documents to be uploaded to the application.

Payment will be required to be made online at the time of submission.

  • A current copy of the Certificate of Currency of $10 million Public Liability Cover
  • A site plan/sketch of the site and proposed work with dimensions
  • for industrial, commercial or multi-dwelling developments you also need a town planning permit.

Permit conditions and application instructions

  • You must pay a non-refundable permit fee when you apply. Fees below.
  • The council reserves the right to charge a bond under certain circumstances. The applicant will be contacted directly by the Council if this is the case after reviewing their application.
  • The permit is valid for 12 months from the date the Council issues it.
  • The council can fine you up to $1000 if you do not get a permit.
  • You must have a minimum of $10 million in public liability insurance. You can get this coverage from any insurance company. It would be best if you had it when you are doing works on or through a road reserve. The policy must be valid for the duration of the permit.

Arranging an inspection - compulsory pre-pour and final inspection

Council requires a compulsory onsite inspection at

  • confirmation of permit:
  • you have prepared the vehicle crossing for construction
  • all excavation works are complete.

Book an inspection at least 24 hours before you need an inspection.

    The maintenance of a vehicle crossing is the responsibility of the owner. Council does not repair any damage caused by contractors either. The owner can contact the contractor to report the damage and request replair
