Occupancy Permit or a Certificate of Final Inspection Enquiry

What is an occupancy permit or a certificate of final inspection permit?

An occupancy permit confirms that your building surveyor is satisfied the building (house, units or apartments) is suitable for occupation.
It is an offence under the Building Act 1993 to occupy the new building before you have received the permit.

Who issues an occupancy permit or a certificate of final inspection permit

The building surveyor who issues the building permit carries out building inspections and gives an occupancy permit or a certificate of final inspection (as applicable) on completion of your building work.

How to obtain copy of Occupancy Permit or Certificate of Final Inspection?

CSO:

  • Advise the customer to first check with the Building Surveyor who issued the building permit for that property.

If they do not know who that person is, they can try to apply for a copy of building documentation with Council.
As per the building act, all building surveyors are meant to provide Council with copies of all building permits they issue within the boundaries of the CGD.
