Bees and wasps can be dangerous to humans, and also prey on and compete with native bees for hive sites and pollen sources.

How to get a permit to keep bee hives on residential properties

Anyone who keeps one or more bee hives in Victoria must register with Agriculture Victoria as a beekeeper. 
Advise customer to contact Agriculture Victoria on PH: 136 186.

Report bees/wasps nests on council owned land/buildings etc.

The council is responsible for the removal of bee or wasp nests on council land or property. A report must be entered

How to enter a report

Complete Merit request

Animal > Bees/Wasps > Nest Investigation
 

Ask and record in the description of Merit:

  • The exact location of the nest.

Report bees/wasps nests/hives on neighbours property with or without permit

If the customer is calling to report or enquire if their neighboring property has a license to have beehives or they have concerns about health or allergies.

Enter a report and a member of the Planning Compliance Team will investigate and will determine if the beekeeper complies with the Apiary Code of Practice.

Note: If a beekeeper complies with the State Government's Apiary Code of Practice, planning compliance cannot assist the affected person.

  • How many hives can you see
  • What is the height of the fence between properties
  • How far away from the fence are the hives

Report bees/wasps on light poles

If a nest is attached to a light pole, advise customer to contact AGL on Ph133 000.

They are responsible to remove the nest.

Report bees/wasps nests (not hives) on customers own property

Owners are responsible for treating the problem or seeking professional advice.

The council cannot recommend a bee removal company, but they can search for them online or in the local newspaper.

Searching for them on Google will be taken as a recommendation from Council, since you work there.
In the event that something goes wrong, they will state that they received the details from the council.

Due to this, they can check whether a relative or friend can search for a company on Google.
